Science Pacing Guide

  1. This is my 2nd year teaching 8th grade, and yes - what a CHALLENGE! I had taught 4th grade for 5 years, and I was very familiar with all of Elementary and 6th grade content, but when I changed schools, I became the Science Teacher for 4th-8th grade in a very small school, and BOY OH BOY did I have to STUDY!!!! Thankfully I am in a great ESC Region, and had some support, but I spent many late nights up reading up on topics and researching. This year I am a little more settled, but I still find myself up late studying to keep up with my students and to read ahead for Biology and Chemistry so I make 110% sure I am sending them on WELL prepared. Glad to know I am not the only one that apathetic teachers, who refuse to improve themselves, makes insane! Keep up the good fight! :)

    1. Wow! I'm not gonna lie...I do not envy you. I cannot imagine planning for 5 grade levels!?!?! The OCD/perfectionist in me just thinks that I'd probably never sleep if I had to plan for that many different classes. Were you at least given curriculum from the previous teacher? Or something to get you started? At my first teaching job, I got the classroom keys and a "good luck!"

      That's awesome that you work your bootie off to make sure those kids are prepared and learning what they are supposed to be learning at each level.

    2. I think that most teachers in Australia plan for 5 or 6 grade levels. I find it very challenging and spend a lot of time at night and weekends planning. At the moment I am teaching 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 chemistry (lucky for me I have 2 lots of 8s this year, otherwise I would have 12 chemistry as well!)

  2. Thank you for sharing this!! I am already trying to gear up for teaching next year...I spent WAY too much time this year on safety and density. Love your outline! Do you think this plan will change when you start implementing common core? Our district just gave us a pre-made unit about force and motion that is 3 weeks long, one week is purely building a roller coaster! Seems like that is a lot of time to spend on a couple of different topics, but my students are loving it!
